Shabbat, known as the Sabbath, is the weekly day of rest in the Jewish calendar, observed from sundown on Friday evening until sunset on Saturday evening.
Shabbat is rich with traditions, one of which is making a special bracha (blessing) over the challah bread. Before this blessing is recited, we first bless the wine or grape juice. During this ritual, the challah is covered to avoid “embarrassing the bread,” since it is blessed second. This beautiful custom has been cherished for generations and will continue to be part of Shabbat for many years to come.
